Parents' Meeting for Phonics and Reading for Y1/2
13.9.17
Please find on this blog the powerpoint shared at the information afernoon and a variety or resources and handouts to support your childs' reading and writing at home.
Phonics is taught as part of our daily English lesson and in small groups 4 times a week. The children will bring a new spelling rule home every Friday. However they also need to know how to read 'pure sounds'.For those of you with children in Year 2 this will have helped them when they took the phonics screen in Year1.
For those of you with children currently in Year 1, your child will take part in a short phonics check this year. This is to check they are in line with the national average and know the phonic sounds. During the check the children will be expected to segment and blend (sound out) real and fake words using their knowledge of phonics sounds.
Real words such as: scrunch green boat
Fake words such as: tabe thard bulm
Knowing the sounds confidently can also support children within their reading and writing. I have attached the phonics sounds for you so you can practice these at home with your child. We currently use the 'Read Write Inc' model when teaching phonics. This means every sound has a story and picture attached to it.
Another way of ensuring your child is confident with their phonics is to play the real and fake games on the attached link ...
